Position Scope and Key Responsibilities:
 
  • Adult cardiac only cases
  • Support four surgeons across two campuses
  • 450-500 heart cases per year
  • 150 TAVR procedures
  • Network support for auto transfusion, PRP/BMA, HIPEC, Angiovac, EVAR, TEVAR, complex lead extractions
  • Non-transplant, non VAD center with minimal Ecmo
 
Surgery Participation:
 
  • Consults with surgeon regarding type of procedure to be performed and any required modification to the extracorporeal circuit, equipment or methods to be employed.  
  • Assembles, primes, circulates and tests the extracorporeal circuit prior to initiation of heart/lung bypass. 
  • Monitors and observes the operation of the heart/lung machine and the patient’s physiologic parameters during extracorporeal circulation, making adjustments as required maintaining adequate perfusion.   
  • Administers medications and/or blood products to the patient via the heart/lung machine, in consultation with the attending surgeon or anesthesiologist.   
  • Obtains patient specimens at appropriate times during the surgical procedure for laboratory analysis.  
  • Point of care coagulation and blood gas analysis
  • Initiate and transport IABP during cardiac surgery
     
Safety Practices:
 
  • Able to follow safety standards according to established guidelines, i.e. lifting, equipment, universal precautions, OSHA guidelines.  
  • Maintains a safe patient environment by reporting faulty equipment, cleans and sterilizes instrumentation per procedure.  
 
Educational Requirements 
 
  • Perfusionist shall have broad education training in cardiovascular perfusion obtained by successful completion of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion training program and certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and/or Board eligible.
  • Maintain current BLS certification
