Job Description for Assistant or Associate Professor of Psychology

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kettering College is seeking to fill an open-rank faculty position in the area of psychology. The individual filling this position will be teaching primarily Introduction to Psychology and Human Development. Other likely courses include Social, Organizational, Abnormal Psychology, Cultural Diversity in Healthcare, and/or Principles in Sociology. Additional expertise in the field of leadership is also preferred. The candidate must demonstrate readiness to develop and teach on-line and face-to-face courses.

This position will be offered as an extended contract, inclusive of a third summer semester, which is an addition to the traditional, standard, two-semester, Fall and Spring academic schedule.

 

Job Responsibilities

Teaching:

  • Organize course planning and revision ensuring currency and academic/ professional standards while developing course syllabi for each class taught
  • Creation and delivery of a supportive and effective learning environment with effective presentation and/or coordination of classroom learning
  • Supervision of independent study as needed
  • Tutoring and remediation such as assignment review or student help sessions
  • Timely and appropriate response to student assignments
  • Uploading of relevant course materials in the current LMS (learning management system)
  • Evaluation of students’ academic progress for each assigned class
  • Professional preparation and reporting of course grades
  • Regular and appropriate review of students’ progress while offer advice for advancement
  • Referring students to Academic Services, when necessary
  • Design and deliver foundational courses, emphasizing practical skills and real-world applications.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional methods, including case studies and hands-on activities.
  • Continuously assess and adapt teaching methods based on student feedback and educational research, ensuring a Christ-centric approach.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain and integrate contemporary expertise in course content, best practices, and emerging trends.
  • accepting responsibility for the learning of those students assigned to the faculty member in the workload assignment developed with the department chair and the respective dean;
  • ensuring that course content is current and reflects accepted academic and professional standards;
  • keeping such records and making such reports as may be required by the College to support student learning, including but not limited to the timely production of syllabi and calculation of grades;

Service:

  • Actively contribute to departmental meetings and institutional committees, collaborating with colleagues on curriculum development, program assessment, etc.
  • Engage in outreach initiatives, connecting with local communities to enhance the institution's presence as a Christ-centric contributor.
  • Provide mentorship to students, guiding them in academic and career development.
  • Contribute to the scholarly community and lifelong learning through participation at professional conferences and workshops.
  • Academic Advising of Students

Scholarship:

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current in the field.
  • Explore opportunities for collaborative research projects with colleagues.
  • Membership and participation in relevant professional organizations
  • Attendance and/or presentations at academic/professional conferences
  • Involvement in on-going research in areas related to your primary academic discipline.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support the Seventh-day Adventist faith-based culture of Kettering College.
  • Teaching evaluation e.g. peer review, self-evaluation
  • Preparation of student recommendations
  • performing such additional services as may be required regarding the advising of students and student organizations;
  • maintaining current professional licensure/registry as appropriate to their individual academic appointment;
  • acting consistently in ways that not only fulfill the job description but also create a learning community;
  • enforcing all rules and regulations established by the College for the governance and management of the program, such as the Honor Code;
  • supporting the College and honoring its standards and values whenever acting as an agent of the College;
  • performing such additional services as may be required to enhance and support student life, such as supporting College-sponsored events;
  • keeping such records and making such reports as may, from time to time, be required by the College to meet its fiscal obligations or the requirements of government and accrediting bodies, such as the attendance records needed for federal financial aid; and
  • otherwise acting not only to fulfill the job description but also to create a caring and collegial community.

 

Basic Job Requirements

  • Masters degree in relevant field to the courses you would be teaching  

Or preferably

  • PhD in Psychology/Counseling or Leadership with a Master’s Degree in Psychology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Having or willing to pursue a PhD
  • Experience or practice within healthcare contexts
  • Research related to medical treatment
  • Research related to the intersection of spirituality and psychology
  • Previous teaching experience, particularly in courses similar to those listed above
  • Demonstrating an interest in service learning and community engagement
