Responsibilities & Requirements

The Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process in providing nursing care to patients in all settings in collaboration with other health care providers. The RN is accountable for his/her own professional development and practice within the scope of care defined by law. Utilizing organization resources, the RN acts a patient advocate for delivery of safe care including delegation of care and participation in performance and practice improvement activities. The delivery of nursing care within Kettering Health Network reflects the mission, vision, values, and philosophies of the organization and nursing departments.

 

The Oncology Nurse Navigator is a professional registered nurse who:

 

  • Possesses oncologyspecific clinical knowledge and offers individual assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome health care system barriers.
  • Uses the nursing process to provide education and resources to facilitate informed decisionmaking and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continum.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and guide to help remove barriers to care.
  • Directs patients and families to available resources and supportive services; provides education or referrals for coping with the diagnosis.
  • Facilitates a team approach, composed of the patient, family, physician, nurse, social service, and other direct and indirect providers. Interacts with the public, physicians, and staff.
  • Serves as Cancer Conference Coordinator by collecting and communicating tumor board cases for presentation, acting as conference facilitator, tracking and uploading conference data for Commission on Cancer reporting, and maintaining conference recommendations.
  • Documents and tracks information using a database or electronic medical record. Tracks, documents, and reports both externally and internally relevant Navigation activities for stakeholders.
  • Pursues continuing education opportunities related to specified program and navigation
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

RN Navigators are employees of the Oncology Service Line and report to the manager of Cancer Support Services and the Operational Director.

 

Education

Bachelor of Science in nursing preferred

Required Licenses/Certification

Licensed in the state of Ohio as a Registered Nurse

BLS certification

OCN certification preferred.

Minimum Work Experience

Minimum five (5) years clinical experience required.

Recent oncology experience preferred.
