Responsibilities & Requirements

Responsible for advancing institutional and departmental goals and providing leadership to the department in harmony with the Mission of the College and the department, in order that the philosophy, goals and objectives or the department and institution may be achieved.  Provide managerial oversight for the department in the areas of budget, assessment, workloads, faculty development, course scheduling coordination and other necessary departmental duties as needed. Teaching of limited courses with the department is preferred.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Builds alignment, direction, and focus of the department’s activities to accomplish departmental and institutional objectives.
  • Sets tone and expectations of all members for creating a successful team of faculty who work to achieve department and institutional goals.
  • Uses teachable moments to assist team members toward team cohesiveness and facilitation of department goals.
  • Facilitates openness to change and continuous improvement for the department. Identifies opportunities and barriers to change; works with faculty and staff to foster continuous improvement.
  • Delegates decision-making authority and task responsibility to others in the department when necessary to maximize operational effectiveness.
  • Leads the department’s development and use of outcomes assessments, where available, to inform curricular and department decisions.
  • Collaborates with academic dean for annual contracts and hiring for faculty within the department.
  • Develops workload allocations of regular faculty in the department, in collaboration with the faculty member and academic dean.
  • Oversees the development/management of the department’s budget.
  • Provides day-to-day operational leadership.
  • Advocates for faculty development opportunities, including resources for further education and professional conferences.
  • Participates as a member of the following committee(s): Dean’s Council, and others as elected.
  • The chair role is a fractional appointment (30-50%) which reduces classroom teaching requirements as defined by the institution’s Faculty Workload policy.

Education and Experience

  • Earned doctoral degree required in science or math specialty
    • Preference is given to candidates with expertise in microbiology, biology, or biochemistry, though other specialties may be considered. If not selected for the chair role, applicants in these fields may be considered for a faculty position.
  • Previous supervisory experience in higher education preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience in higher education

Professional/Affiliations

  • Active membership in an appropriate professional organization is a strongly recommended element of this position, though is not required at the time of hire.
