The Senior Accountant will play a pivotal role in driving financial excellence across the organization. This position goes beyond traditional accounting—it's about transforming the way we work. You’ll lead efforts to streamline accounting processes, embrace automation, and implement smarter workflows that boost accuracy and efficiency. In addition to overseeing financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls, you’ll supervise and mentor staff accountants, collaborate cross-functionally to deliver actionable financial insights, and support strategic planning and budgeting. You’ll also take ownership of resolving complex financial inquiries, supporting audits and tax filings, and championing change in a constantly evolving environment. The senior accountant will be responsible for analyzing financial data, preparing reports, providing insights to support strategic decision-making, and supervising the staff accountants. Additionally, ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and proper internal controls. The senior accountant will collaborate with various departments to provide financial insights, assist in strategic planning, and contribute to the budgeting processing. Also, responsible for financial inquires, problem resolution, assist with audits and tax filings, and other duties as assigned.

 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.  

Work Experience 

  • 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare, corporate or public accounting setting.

  • Experience supervision staff or leading a project.

Skills 

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and health care industry standards, financial reporting, and accounting software.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.) and other Office software

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Understanding of the financial statement close process (monthly, quarterly, and year-end).

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and supervise staff accountants.

Essential Functions 

  • General Ledger Management

    • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of the general ledger.
    • Ensure accurate and timely recording of transactions, including journal entries and account adjustments related to complex and estimation accounts.
  • Account Reconciliation:

    • Reconcile complex and estimation general ledger accounts.
    • Identify discrepancies and resolve issues in a timely manner.
    • Monitor and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and timeliness, including the review of staff accountants’ reconciliation.
  • Financial Reporting:

    • Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Prepare reports for management and auditors, ensuring compliance with internal controls and accounting policies.
    • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards.
    • Perform variance analysis and provide insights into financial trends and performance.
  • Month-End/Year-End Close:

    • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring all financial transactions are recorded and accurate with a focus on more complex/estimation accounts.
    • Prepare and submit necessary journal entries to close accounting periods.
    • Evaluate financial performance by comparing and analyzing actual results with plans and forecasts, including complex and estimation areas.
  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Assist with preparation of 990 tax filings, and other related documents.
    • Assist auditors by providing requested documentation, including audited financial statements and footnotes, and responding to inquiries during the annual audit process.
    • Ensure compliance with health care industry regulations, GAAP, and organizational policies.
    • Coordinate audits and maintain detailed financial records for regulatory reviews.
    • Stay updated on changes in laws, regulations, and best practices affecting health care finances.
    • Work with Internal Audit and Compliance with requests.
  • Internal Controls:

    • Support adherence to company policies and procedures regarding financial transactions, accounting, and reporting.
    • Help identify opportunities to improve processes, ensure efficiency, and strengthen internal controls.
    • Assist with updating/drafting finance policies for Kettering Health.
  • Budget:

    • Assist in budgeting and forecasting processes.
    • Monitor budgets for various departments, including analyzing variance to actuals.
    • Assist in long-term financial planning and forecasting activities.
    • Identify cost-saving opportunities and financial risks.
  • Team Collaboration & Leadership:

    • Mentor, support and supervise staff accountants.
    • Collaborate with other departments to align financial goals with organizational objectives.
    • Provide leadership in process improvement and efficiency optimization.
  • Other Duties as assigned: 
    • Participate in special projects or perform other duties as assigned by management.
    • Support the development and implementation of financial strategies.
    • Collaborate with other departments to gather and analyze relevant data.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master in Business Administration or Accountancy, preferred.
  • CPA or CPA candidate status (or plans to pursue certification), preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit healthcare organizations, preferred.
