Responsibilities & Requirements

The Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO) is responsible for strategic and operational nursing leadership in the development, deployment, and integration of clinical information systems to support clinicians and patient services. This responsibility includes, but is not limited to, improving the clinical quality, safety, and operational integrity of clinical information systems, as well as integrating quality improvement and regulatory standards. The CNIO will lead and participate in various committees that represent the needs and requirements of the nursing community, serving as an advocate for the use of information technology in the clinical setting. The CNIO will develop a strong collaborative relationship with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO), and the Director of Informatics. Together, they will provide clinical leadership in utilizing information technology to support clinical quality and safety. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

 

• Leads nursing digital transformation initiatives, including evaluation and deployment of emerging technologies (e.g., ambient documentation, virtual nursing, mobile workflows).

• Partners with patient experience leaders to ensure that nursing documentation and IT systems support compassionate, efficient care.

• Recommend enhancements for clinical systems, the utilization of analytics, and other needs that improve patient care and improve clinician wellness.

• Work collaboratively with the IT and Clinical Leadership team to develop strategic plans regarding information management and clinical IT.

• Serves on IT Governance and Clinical Committees to ensure alignment with nursing and interprofessional care standards.

• Establish a relationship with clinicians to advocate for the use of clinical information systems in support of clinical decision support, evidence-based practice, and patient safety.

• Provide informatics-based clinical reviews of plans for testing, training, hardware, and support of clinical IT initiatives.

• Actively participates in governance forums, clinical advisory groups, and change control boards to ensure the voice of clinical practice informs IT priorities.

• Proactively seek to educate stakeholders and seek their input regarding IT strategic planning initiatives and outcomes. 

• Serves as an expert to communicate nursing and health care trends and issues at the local, regional, state, and/or national level.

• Mentors and develops nurse informaticists to build the next generation of clinical informatics leaders.

• Champion of data analytics tools to drive technology improvements and monitor change. 

 

Job Requirements:

 

• BSN Required 
• Master’s degree in nursing or clinical informatics preferred 
• ANCC Informatics Nursing Certification or CPHIMS preferred 
• Epic Certification(s) preferred 
7-10 years of management in nursing and at least 5 years of management in Informatics or Information Technology.
Strong knowledge of nursing theory and practice. 
Ability to analyze complex clinical operations and structure processes to facilitate decision-making regarding clinical information systems. 
 Advanced interpersonal and communication skills are essential for providing effective leadership and collaboration within a multidisciplinary setting. 
 Advanced skills in project and program management and change management. 
 Demonstrated experience and knowledge in healthcare informatics and health information systems. 
 Proficiency in EHR systems and related clinical applications. 
 Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex clinical data. 
 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. 
 Understanding of healthcare regulations, privacy, and security requirements.
