The Surgical Technologist First Assistant (STFA) is responsible for providing assistance to surgeon and under his/her direction and supervision. The STFA participates in the care of the surgical patient with primary emphasis on the intraoperative phase of care. The STFA assists the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of care by maintaining hemostasis, utilizing the Electro-surgical unit, clamping, cauterizing, ligating, and suturing tissue. The STFA maintains visualization of the surgical field through manipulation and retraction of tissue.
